20th May 2011 PE Teacher Release Funding
The Secretary of State for Education will be making available funding to release from timetable a PE teacher from every secondary school in England for one day a week in the school years 2011/12 and 2012/13.
I am sorry that we have not been able to give you information before now, and that there is still some detail that the Department cannot yet confirm.
Eligible schools: all state maintained secondary schools and Academies; middle-deemed secondary schools and special schools (including non-maintained special schools); and pupil referral units with secondary aged pupils will receive the funding.
Level of funding: this will be a fixed, flat-rate grant . Schools can choose to use their own budgets to increase the amount of time spent on this role, if they wish.
Funding period: funding will be for two academic years 2011/12 and 2012/13.
Purpose of funding: the PE teacher funding will not be ring-fenced. The PE teachers can:
Sustainability: Schools should plan from the beginning that funding will end by August 2013. Schools should seek to embed the work that the released PE teachers do within the school and with local primary schools into their core provision.
Funding mechanism: the Department is exploring the best way to pay this funding to schools. We will pass on further details about this as soon as we have it.
